Kutary — COIAB
What it is
Kutary is a mobile application for collecting indigenous territorial data in the field, developed in partnership with the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB). Phase 1 covered technical requirements, UI/UX design and database modeling; phase 2 (ongoing) is development, customization, testing and deployment with the communities.
The app is built on top of the CoMapeo ecosystem, maintained as forks in the Transistir GitHub organization:
- comapeo-mobile — the mobile app
- comapeo-core — data and collaboration library
- comapeo-schema — data schemas
Why it matters
Territorial monitoring is a daily practice of indigenous organizations. A tool designed with — and for — the people who defend the territory turns field observations into organized, shareable evidence, without depending on external platforms.
Technologies
- CoMapeo (offline-first mobile mapping)
- Local-first data and peer-to-peer synchronization
- Participatory design sessions with community monitors
